![]() A really strong aspect of Just Cause 2 is the lack of a reputational system. ![]() Missions set by the three factions involve a range of tasks, such as stronghold captures or target eliminations, which all remain just the right side of repetitive. ![]() The main story is advanced by completing Agency Missions, but these longer challenges only pop up after the player has done one of two things completed enough faction missions or accrued enough Chaos points. Despite offering helicopter extraction between certain key locations and Black Market vehicle drops, Just Cause 2 still falls into the open-world trap of lots of time spent tediously travelling between objectives. However, it's possibly a touch too big, especially for those who just want to get on with the missions. There are 350 settlements dotted throughout the world and the huge playing territory is fun to explore. At around 400 square miles in size, the vast terrain features coastal bays, lush tropical plains, glittering sky scraper-packed cities and snow-capped mountains. The irritations in Just Cause 2 are certainly abundant, but the game's unwavering enthusiasm and rich world ensure that it's always hard to switch off.Īs with all good open-world games, the real star of Just Cause 2 is the island of Panau. However, the grapple and parachute also bring some frustrating moments when a jump is missed or players get stuck to a wall to be pummelled with bullets. This enables some rather humorous avenues, such as hooking unwitting enemies onto passing vehicles to be dragged along the ground. For example, one mission involves setting explosives at the bottom of a radar silo and then grappling to the top, firing off the parachute and floating to safety as the structure explodes.Īfter completing a few missions, players earn a double-ended grapple for placing a hook into one thing and then attaching to another. The grapple really opens up a sense of player freedom, in that any situation can be easily escaped. He can hang from spaces and grapple to other points, with the added bonus of the parachute if things go wrong (players can also use grapple, guns and explosives while parachuting). Players can use the grapple to easily reach almost any surface by aiming the reticule and quickly tapping the left bumper to launch Rodriguez forward. Aside the usual range of weapons - everything from submachine guns to rocket launchers - the game features a reusable parachute on Rodriguez's back and a permanent grapple hook on his arm (which this time is wisely made available from the start). The majority of game design aspects in Just Cause 2 will feel instantly familiar to anyone who has played the Mercenaries series, apart from its use of grappling hook and parachute. However, he will also have to cope with the megalomaniacal Panauan president Pandak "Baby" Panay, and the island's three main warring factions, all eager to tear the world apart. As Sheldon is holding a lot of sensitive information about the shadowy Agency, the Latino killing machine is tasked with tracking him down, dead or alive. His old boss Tony Sheldon has disappeared on the island and is rumoured to have gone rogue. Just Cause 2 sees the return of Rico 'Scorpio' Rodriguez, who this time is causing chaos on the fictional island of Panau in Southeast Asia. However, such faults never stop Just Cause 2 from being a lengthy, polished and well presented action title that will almost always put a smile on your face. Sure, the story and stereotypical characters are woeful, and the game also suffers from the odd bullethole of poor design. By using its trademark grapple hook and parachute gameplay, the game allows players to indulge their action hero fantasies, such as skyjacking a helicopter, raining down fire on a military base and then parachuting to safety without even breaking sweat. Set in a massive sandbox world, third-person shooter Just Cause 2 packs all the explosive and preposterous action of a Hollywood blockbuster. Developer: Eidos Interactive, Avalanche Studios
